The Mood Matrix©

Understanding the Dashboard of Your Brain

The Mood Matrix © is a neuroscience-based system designed to help us stop merely reacting to our moods and start understanding them. By viewing our internal state as a "dashboard" of data, the Matrix provides a shared language to decode energy levels and emotional wellbeing.

The S.T.A.R Method

Using the 4-step S.T.A.R. protocol:

Scan, Track, Assess, and Reset/Maintain, helps teenagers and adults to identify whether they are in Overdrive,, Shutdown, Calm, or Focus/Flow.

It is a practical, shame-free tool that moves us away from "managing ours and others behaviour" and towards supporting and recognising the human nervous system.

For Schools: Connection Before Correction

In a busy school environment, a student in "Shutdown" can look like they are being lazy, while a student in "Overdrive" can look like they are being defiant.

The Mood Matrix changes the conversation from "What is wrong with you?" to "What mood/state are you in?".

By implementing this framework, schools  can prioritise "Connection Before Correction," recognising that a dysregulated brain cannot learn. It provides staff and students with a common vocabulary to co-regulate, ensuring that the "Long Exhale" and sensory resets become part of the daily rhythm, ultimately lowering the "noise" in the classroom and increasing engagement.

For Parents & Carers: Borrowing Your Calm

As a parent/carer, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed ourselves, when our teenager's  mood shifts suddenly. The Mood Matrix removes the moral weight of these behaviours; it helps us see that a child in 'shutdown' or 'overdrive' is often just reacting to a nervous system that feels unsafe. By understanding the "Exhale Rule" and the importance of co-regulation, you can learn to "borrow your calm" to your child. Instead of escalating a conflict, you can use the S.T.A.R. method together to identify state/mood, whether it’s a digital overload from a phone or physical exhaustion, and work together to find the right "Reset" to bring the family back to a state of connection.

For Teenagers: Taking Back the Remote Control

For Teenagers: Taking Back the Remote Control

Ever feel like your mood just "happens" to you?

One minute you’re fine, the next you’re snapping at a friend or wanting to disappear into your hoodie?

The Mood Matrix is like a remote control for your brain. It helps you realise that you aren't "being difficult" your brain is just processing "Inside Info" (like hunger or tiredness) and "Outside Info" (like a loud hallway or a stressful group chat). By naming your state, you can use quick "Resets" like a long exhale or a physical "reset" to move out of the heavy feeling of Shutdown or the frantic energy of Overdrive and back into your own "Focus" zone.
