Acquired Brain Injuries

Supporting individuals and Families living with an ABI

This is personal for us at Forming Connections

Forming Connections was born from a journey of resilience and a profound belief in the power of recovery. When Brenda’s partner of thirteen years, Joe, sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury, their lives changed in an instant. Joe, a teacher of children with SEND, found himself facing a new reality that eventually led him away from the classroom. However, this transition wasn't an end, but a beginning. Brenda founded this business to create a space where she could support Joe’s ongoing rehabilitation while giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Today, Joe’s daily involvement is a testament to the fact that a diagnosis is not a destination, but a starting point for a different, meaningful chapter.

The Power of the Developing Brain

The foundation of Joe’s progress, and the hope we offer to every family we work with, is rooted in the science of neuroplasticity. While a brain injury is a significant event, Brenda understood that the brain is not a static organ; it is remarkably adaptive. By utilizing specific, repetitive, and meaningful activities, we can encourage the brain to form new neural pathways, "rewiring" itself to regain lost functions or develop new ways of navigating the world.

This blend of professional neuroscience and personal lived experience allows us to look toward the future with genuine positivity. We know firsthand that with the right environment and consistent support, the brain’s capacity for healing is extraordinary. At Forming Connections, we don’t just focus on what was lost; we celebrate every new connections  made, proving that there is always a path forward filled with hope and potential.

Joe has spent a lot of his time in our office relearning how to use technology, he used to teach Film Studies and film making has always been one of his passions, he has combined this with trying to learn about what it means to live with a brain injury and he recently started a YouTube channel to focus on the stories of other survivors of an acquired brain injury, see below for more.
